Zero Tolerance
Zero Tolerance of Abusive, Aggressive or Inappropriate Behaviour
Australia Disability Services (ADS) is committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for our participants, families, carers, employees, support workers, contractors and visitors.

Abusive, aggressive, intimidating, threatening, discriminatory, sexually inappropriate or violent behaviour towards any person involved with Australia Disability Services will not be accepted.

Respectful Behaviour

Everyone who receives, provides or interacts with our services has the right to feel safe and be treated with dignity and respect.

We understand that people may sometimes feel frustrated, distressed or upset. We will listen to concerns and support people to communicate their needs respectfully. However, behaviour that places another person’s safety, dignity or wellbeing at risk is not acceptable.

Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:

  • bullying, harassment or psychological abuse;
  • verbal abuse, shouting, intimidation or threatening language;
  • repeated abusive, threatening or harassing phone calls, emails or messages;
  • physical aggression, violence or threats of violence;
  • sexual harassment or unwelcome sexual behaviour;
  • discriminatory, racist, degrading or offensive behaviour;
  • deliberately damaging property or using objects to threaten or intimidate another person; and
  • any other behaviour that creates a serious risk to the safety or wellbeing of another person.
If Unacceptable Behaviour Occurs

Depending on the circumstances and level of risk, Australia Disability Services may:

  • ask the person to stop the behaviour;
  • end a phone call, meeting, visit or other interaction;
  • ask a person to leave our premises where appropriate;
  • remove a worker or participant from an unsafe situation;
  • review or limit the way future contact occurs;
  • document and report the incident; or
  • contact Victoria Police or emergency services where there is violence, a threat of violence or an immediate safety risk.
If there is an immediate threat to life or safety, call Triple Zero (000).

Participants and Individual Support Needs

Australia Disability Services recognises that some behaviours may be related to a person’s disability, communication needs, distress or behaviours of concern.

We will consider each participant’s individual circumstances and, where appropriate, use reasonable adjustments, de-escalation strategies, support plans and behaviour support strategies.

Our approach is not intended to punish or unfairly exclude a participant because of disability-related behaviour. However, we must also take reasonable steps to protect participants, workers and others from serious or immediate harm.

What You Can Expect From Us

Our employees, support workers, contractors and representatives are also expected to maintain high standards of behaviour.

You can expect us to:

  • treat you with dignity, courtesy and respect;
  • communicate professionally and respectfully;
  • listen to your concerns and feedback;
  • respect your privacy, choice and individual needs; and
  • take reasonable steps to maintain a safe environment.
We welcome complaints, concerns and feedback. Raising a complaint or disagreeing with Australia Disability Services is not considered inappropriate behaviour.

We ask everyone who interacts with Australia Disability Services to work with us to maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all.
